The McManus gallery in Dundee has acquired beautiful paintings of the Arctic and Antarctic two of our finest contemporary artists. Ade Adesina: Aurora, Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh **** who accompanied the Dundee Antarctic Whaling expedition in 1892-3 to search for new whaling grounds. The earliest radio communications were established with Antarctica in 1913, with Australia 1892-93 British whaling exploration (from Dundee) of Tay; William Gordon Burn Murdoch, an artist, accompanied the expedition aboard Balaena. Burn Murdoch, who was known as "WG" to his friends, used this opportunity to create paintings of their journeys and he had a contract to create a book. With these and his notes he wrote the book Edinburgh to the Antarctic which was published Longmans in 1894.
